How threaded rod galvanizing works as a sacrificial layer

Aug 17,2023

Zinc plating is a common protective coating applied to threaded rods to enhance their corrosion resistance. The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial layer, corroding instead of the underlying metal.

Zinc plating acts as a sacrificial layer to enhance the corrosion resistance of threaded rods due to a process known as "galvanic protection" or "cathodic protection." This principle is based on the galvanic series, which ranks different metals based on their tendency to corrode when in contact with an electrolyte (such as moisture or salts).

When two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte, a galvanic cell is formed. In this cell, the metal with a higher position in the galvanic series (i.e., the one that is more prone to corrosion) becomes the anode, while the metal lower in the series acts as the cathode. The anode undergoes corrosion, releasing metal ions into the electrolyte.

In the case of zinc-plated threaded rods, zinc is higher in the galvanic series compared to steel or iron (the materials commonly used for threaded rods). Therefore, when the zinc coating is in contact with moisture or other corrosive elements, it becomes the sacrificial anode, corroding and releasing zinc ions into the environment.

The zinc ions prevent the underlying steel or iron from corroding by creating a protective barrier on the surface of the threaded rod. This sacrificial corrosion of the zinc coating ensures that the underlying metal is shielded from direct contact with the corrosive elements, thereby extending the lifespan and durability of the threaded rod.

By utilizing the galvanic protection provided by the zinc coating, threaded rods can effectively resist corrosion in various environments, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including those exposed to moisture, humidity, or other corrosive agents.
