What important role does the flange play in Flange Bolt?

Oct 07,2023

The flange in a flange bolt plays several important roles that contribute to its effectiveness in fastening applications. These roles make flange bolts suitable for specific situations where load distribution, vibration resistance, and sealing are essential. Here are the key roles that the flange plays in a flange bolt:
Load Distribution:
The primary function of the flange is to distribute the clamping force evenly over a larger surface area. When the flange is tightened against a surface, it spreads the load or pressure, reducing the risk of damage to the fastened components. This helps prevent the bolt head from digging into softer materials and provides a more stable connection.
Vibration Resistance:
Flange bolts are particularly effective at resisting loosening due to vibration or dynamic loads. The flange provides a wider contact area, creating friction against the surface it's tightened against. This frictional resistance helps prevent the bolt from rotating and backing out, even in high-vibration environments.
Reduced Embedment Depth:
In some applications, flange bolts are advantageous because they reduce the depth to which the bolt must be embedded into the material being fastened. This can be beneficial when working with thin materials or when space constraints limit the available bolt length.
Sealing:
The flange can serve as a sealing element in certain applications. When the flange is tightened against a surface, it can create a seal that helps prevent the ingress of moisture, contaminants, or gases. This is especially important in applications where a watertight or airtight seal is required.
Serrated Flanges (Optional):
Some flange bolts have serrated or toothed flanges on the underside. These serrations provide additional grip and bite into the surface, enhancing their resistance to loosening from vibration and improving load distribution.
Washer Face (Optional):
In certain designs, flange bolt have a washer-like face on the underside of the flange. This face provides a smooth and even surface for load distribution and sealing. It can help protect the surface being fastened from damage.
Locking Mechanism (Optional):
Flange bolts can be used in conjunction with various locking mechanisms, such as lock washers or thread-locking adhesives, to further enhance their resistance to loosening.
