What are the self-tapping screws used for?

May 24,2022

Self-tapping Screw actually refers to a self-tapping screw that does not need to be used with a nut. The thread is self-tapping type, and the tail is pointed. It forms an internal thread in the hole by extrusion and forms a reliable locking thread connection. Also refers to pointed, coarse-toothed, hard wood screws. It is very common in our life, but many people may face some problems when using it, lack some tools or don't know what tools should be equipped to screw self-tapping screws. Here is a brief introduction to what you use to drive in the self-tapping screw. In fact, the self-tapping screw can be driven by a hand electric drill with a suitable bit (how to choose a bit?), air screwdriver, screwdriver, gun drill, and electric hammer. Generally, an electric hammer is required to drive into concrete. Concrete walls with a grade of C10 and above cannot be nailed with ordinary nails. If the bearing capacity requirements are not high, cement steel nails can be used directly; if the bearing capacity requirements are high, expansion screws, ordinary plastic expansion tubes and self-tapping screw models are required to fix. Therefore, when we apply self-tapping screws, we must understand the characteristics of self-tapping screws. Do not confuse them and cause problems to the project. The main features of self-tapping screws are as follows:
(1) Generally, it is made of carburized steel (99% of the total product). Also available in stainless steel or non-ferrous metals.
(2) The product must be heat treated. Carbon steel self-tapping screws must be carburized, and stainless steel self-tapping screws must be solution hardened. In order to make the self-tapping screw meet the mechanical properties and performance required by the standard.
(3) The product has high surface hardness and good core toughness. That is, "inner softness and outer rigidity". This is a major feature of the performance requirements of self-tapping screws. If the surface hardness is low, it cannot be screwed into the matrix; if the toughness of the core is poor, it will break as soon as it is screwed, and it cannot be used. Therefore, "inner softness and outer rigidity" are the requirements for self-tapping screws to meet the performance requirements.
(4) The surface of the product needs surface protection treatment, generally electroplating treatment. Some product surfaces require phosphate treatment (phosphating). Wall panel self-tapping screws are mostly phosphated.
